The State Science and Technology Institute (SSTI) has compiled award and proposal statistics by state for Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants. SSTI’s table shows Phase I SBIR data for all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. Statistics include awards, proposals and award-to-proposal conversion rates for nine of the 12 participating agencies.

Information is broken down by column for 12 SBIR-participating federal agencies: U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Education (ED), Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Transportation (DOT), NASA, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

The aggregate totals show that Montana companies won 25 Phase I awards out of 80 proposal submissions, for an award rate of 31%. This rate was the second highest in the nation, far exceeding the national average 18% Phase I award rate. Congratulations to all our Montana SBIR awardees, who have demonstrated such extraordinary competence and capability focused on new technology development and commercialization!
