Spots still available for Master’s degree in education learning development program that starts in Havre on Friday 8/29/08

A weekend program offering a master’s degree in education learning development starts in Havre Friday and still has openings for people interested.
“There are a few spots still available if folks are interested,” said Curtis Smeby, coordinator of the cohort program at Montana State University- Northern, adding that he has 12 students signed up now and 15 “would be grand,” and a few more even better.

The program teaches courses lasting three weekends a semester, with the classes taught Friday evenings and Saturdays, allowing professionals to continue their jobs while continuing their educations. “If they happen to be teaching in schools and want to learn about education learning, this can be done in a nice fashion with a lot of support from the cohort,” Smeby said. “That is one of the nice things about the cohort, these people become quite close.”
Smeby said this is the 10th year Northern has offered the cohort program, which has been taught in Helena, Great Falls and Browning as well as Havre — one cohort program just finished in Great Falls and another is ongoing in Browning. He estimated that the program has graduated about 180 students over the 10 years. The cohort program teaches two three-weekend courses over each of six semesters, with the program starting this weekend set to graduate at the end of the summer semester in 2010.
Smeby said in a previous interview that the education learning development degree is popular for a variety of professionals interested in improving their understanding of the learning process. He said the program is of interest to teachers, librarians, nurses, military personnel and others involved in education.
